A unique fishing technique, stilt fishing is common to Sri Lanka. The fisherman sits on a cross bar tied to a vertical pole planted into the reef. It takes immense upper body strength to climb the stilt and balance oneself on it. They use one hand to balance themselves and the other to hold a fishing rod or line. Fishermen are known to sit on the stilts for hours to catch their quota for the day. The sight of these men on stilts over the expanse of the wide ocean is truly one to behold.
