Veiled water bearers of Rajasthan

An arid region located near the formidable Thar desert, Rajasthan in India is home to princely nobles as well as desert nomads.  Water is sparse in this area and rural women have to often walk for miles to gather drinking water for their families.  While men are away at work, the task of portering water in metal and clay vessels falls on the women.  With pots of water perched on their head, these veiled water bearers walk with a regal stance amid the sweltering desert sands.  Here is a curated photo collection of these amazing women.
